Don't forget about Blessed Niels Stensen, also known as Nicolaus Steno (1638–1686). He was a brilliant scientist whose work laid the foundations for key advancements in both anatomy and geology. As an anatomist, Stensen made critical discoveries, including identifying the heart as a muscle and discovering the parotid duct (Stensen’s duct). His keen observations and dissections revolutionised the understanding of the human body, particularly in the study of glands and the circulatory system.

In geology, Stensen’s contributions were groundbreaking. He is considered one of the fathers of modern geology, having formulated principles of stratigraphy, including the concept that sedimentary layers form horizontally over time. His realisation that fossils were the remains of once-living organisms helped develop the field of paleontology.

Despite his scientific achievements, Stensen’s deep faith led him to convert to Catholicism, become a priest, and later a bishop. His legacy endures in both science and faith, blending a profound intellectual curiosity with spiritual devotion.

I was brought up in a very devout and Bible reading family, people told me i wouldn't last long in the scientific field of earth sciences i chose. Not only did I love it, obtained my degree with honours but also one of my teachers had been to seminary before teaching. Now when I look at mountains and when i analyse my soil samples not only do I thank my Creator for such beauty and style but i can also imagine the earth as a living planet with its geological upheavals, action of wind, ice and rain and understand how best to grow our food and name His creation (scientific names of birds, mamals and plant species). Btw Adam was the first scientist as he first gave names to each creature

Hospitals, universities, and the big bang theory are what first came to mind. Orphanages, schools, charities for the homeless, etc...

My priest IS a scientist. He was a scientist for the army for 15 years prior to his ordination. He continues his scientific study for fun in his "free time." Yeah.

Let's not forget they taught reading and writing to a lot of people. That helps.😊

I go to a catholic school literally half of the science department are sisters. The sister who teaches chemistry also just so happens to have previously worked on nuclear engineering a cannister for radioactive material and is one of the best teachers I've ever had

As a Nigerian Catholic, I am so glad I found this channel. It's so refreshing to see more of us Christians push back against the lie that Christianity hindered science or societal advancement.

I’m not sure if you’re a scientist, a historian, or a religious scholar or maybe all three, but this was a great little video! I feel smarter now. :-) subscribed!

I find a lot of the time, skepticism is actually born out of ignorance. Glad we have channels like this helping to shed some light on the work Christians have done around the world.

You literally don't get modern science without the integral influence and advancements of Christianity.

Absolutely, I'm a verdant atheist, but I'm not theologically uneducated. Some of the most productive scientists were religious, some of them saw the study of the natural world as a religious practice, the better the understanding of the creation, the better the understanding of the creator. Whatever your system of beliefs, if it leads you to be curious and study the world, then it benefits all of us and should be appreciated!

Honestly, there only needed to be two words in that answer:

What have religious people ever done for science?

Create it.
