Scoop out the litter box everyday for poop and pee. Completely change out the litter every 2 weeks. Wash with hot water and a mild detergent like Ivory dish soap. Replace with 2 to 3 inches of litter.

I have a cat. I clean his litter box twice a day. In the evening and in the morning.
Every one should clean the litter box at least once a day.
Not every two days, not once a week.
This way you will never be able to smell anything.
Use clumping litter. Any other cat litter is useless believe me.
And there is two things you can do if the pee clump sticks to the box. Either you remove the sand around the clumb by shifting the litter box so the cat litter stands not in the way and than remove the clump with tissue and this is very important, clean the surface where the clump was with a water based baby whipe tissue than dry it with tissue.
Or you shift the hole cat litter in a container. Than clean the box and put cat litter back.
First solution is the better one.
And by the way you will allways find litter aroy-und the house.
This is unfortunate by for that I havent found a solution yet.
