ABOUT ME:
My name is Alyssa Matesic, and I’m a professional book editor with 7+ years of book publishing and editorial experience. Throughout my career, I’ve held editorial roles across both sides of the publishing industry: Big Five publishing houses and literary agencies. This goal of this channel is to help writers throughout the book writing journey—whether you're working on your manuscript or you're looking for publishing advice.

It's harsh but I think it ultimately comes down to just having a great book.

I think it was Jim Butcher who once said it's not a lottery. It's all about making your writing good. I've heard before from editors who review submissions from the slush pile that 80% of submissions are just plain crap writing. Before you try to publish, whether traditional or indie, make your writing good.

you could submit a query to the first agency you come across and if might resonate straight away with the agent and done ✅ you’re published! or the same manuscript could sit idle across multiple agencies forever I guess that’s how it goes, right place, right time

For years I try to get an agent. Besides improving my writing and make changes to the letter, that's all I can do.

Also you have to consider that there are books being written by teenagers and others in their young 20s, who haven’t even lived their adult lives more than a couple years. Their writing skills are still developing. If you are a good writer and not in your teens or early 20s, with developed skills and lots of life experience to share in your stories, that will be to your great advantage and put you in the upper share of books that get published. I’m not trying to crap all over young people, I’m just saying that older people have a better grasp on human nature, on manipulation, lying, narcissism, and what things people do when they are being honest or when they are being devious. And thus they are able to more accurately represent those things in their stories.😎

There’s a shortage of great books. If a book is great, it will get published, unless all the gatekeepers are completely corrupt.

is finding a literary agent very difficult?

i’m writing my first book ever, it’s a memoir detailing the struggles and challenges I’ve overcome in my life delivered in a self-help format for my son.

I didn’t know if there was a theme or style of book that has better chances of being noticed or if it’s just your literary ability that gets noticed more so than the theme

Wow so glad I found channel. I’m at this same stage also and I was thinking about documenting it also.

another way is self publishing on apple books. the only downside is that you may not get as much money.

How do you know when to give up? 10 rejections? 50?

Except that it does matter a good deal if you’re thinking about writing as being your job. If the success rate is 3% this matters a lot when people are simply deciding that they intend live off writing and publishing books. Yes there are different rates by genre, I get that. But I think the fact that people are so reluctant to be honest about success rates is a problem and only serves to prop up grifters who promise and pinky swear that for hundreds of dollars they can take anything from anyone and teach them to be JK Rawlings.

I’m under no such pressure because I understand that being traditional published is like making the NY Yankees. I’m not aiming for that because I understand that it’s highly unlikely to actually happen. I can still do the best I can and still have fun, and I can make a pdf for my website or whatever.
