Awesome videos man! I picked up Tenkara fishing over 8 years ago, when it first came to the U.S. and I haven't thrown a fly from a western rod since. I love the simplicity of it, and the ability to hike for miles into the mountains with it for native specks in the headwaters. If you ever come to western North Carolina hit me up and I'll take you to one of those creeks.

I know I am a year late but I just got into Tenkara. I really enjoy your videos and blog. I also appreciate that you aren't a brand snob and give "cheap" rods a chance. I have always been someone who didn't really care about the name, as long as it worked for what I needed it to do. Since watching your videos and reading your blog I have half a dozen rods with only one being "name brand". Your reviews and incite have been great and helped me get more into it. I now only pack one fly rod (as opposed to 2-3 before) and a couple of Tenkara. I fish mostly in Shenandoah and GWNF so something like the cheap 180 cm rod is perfect for those small streams with massive overgrowth. Has made fishing more enjoyable!

It's so thrilling to catch little trout in small streams. Especially on tenkara.

I think those cheap poles are designed for activities such as micro fishing where you are just dipping the line in rather than casting it

Nice catch! It doesn't matter if it's a $100 or $10 rod. What matters is that you catch fish. Funny, I always catch the most fish when I use the cheapest rod in my collection.

What a great day! It ain't the arrow... it's the Indian. True in golf clubs or fishing rods, lol. You keep slaying 'em, we will keep watching!, 👊

Another great video! I’m amazed that you pulled all of those fish out of that one pool! Great stuff, thanks for sharing the video.

Very cool. I have a Tiny Ten five-footer which I like under certain circumstances.

In brook trout streams in NW Connecticut, there is often more casting room than you'd think from a casual glance. What I often do is carry a short fly rod (6-7 1/2 feet) and put a longer fixed-line rod in the pack. WHen I get bored with one, out comes the other.

Or I might bring a zoom rod -- Dragontail Mizuchi for example -- and then the Tiny Ten or a Nissin 180 for close work.

With the short rods, after a lot of trial and error, I settled on either fluoro level line or a furled leader, four feet long, designed for 0-3 weight fly lines.

I already have 4 tenkara rods but I thought I might try the $3 one. It actually worked yesterday. Love your videos, hope you head up to the bitterroots soon, I can show you some nice small creeks.

G'Day from Australia,
You blooded those little rods well after looking like you were going to luck out below that dam/diversion structure.

I fish various length tenkara rods from 8 to 12 feet but for really scrubby, tight creeks I use a Kiyotaki 180 or a really cheap 150cm Aliexpress rod. The last one is stiffish but I use .7mm floating shooting line and it casts very well with this line. The first time I took it out I caught three nice wild brown trout from one of my local creeks. Fun to flick flies into really tight spots.
I enjoy watching your videos.
Cheers,
Steve.
PS I considered the Tiny Ten rod but due to our lousy exchange rate and postage, it was going to be a very expensive rod by the time it got to OZ. That's not the sellers fault.

Love your channels! I had never heard of Tankara fly fishing before I came across your SUVRVing channel. What are your thoughts on doing a beginners guide to starting Tankara fly fishing this spring? I'd love to get started and live in Salt Lake so I'm familiar with so many places you go.

I don't know why I'm still surprised when you pull fish out of these teeny tiny creeks. I start out skeptical every single time and then you go and starting hauling them in yet again. :-)

Damn! By the time I got to this rod, it was $8. Still, that rod has caught me more fish than all of my others combined, so far. 🙂
