Matala was a fishing village.
In the 1960s, the famous caves (an former roman cemetary) were occupied by hippies who were later driven out by the church and the military junta. Matala is now a heavily overbuilt tourist destination relying on coach tours and summer visitors. There are many gift shops and bars.
Matala's hippie history relives during the 3 days Matala Beach Festival .

Matala war ein Fischerdorf.
In den 1960er Jahren wurden die berühmten Höhlen (ein ehemaliger römischer Friedhof) von Hippies besetzt, die später von der Kirche und der Militärjunta vertrieben wurden. Matala ist heute ein stark überbautes Touristenziel, das auf Bustouren und Sommerbesucher angewiesen ist. Es gibt viele Souvenirläden und Bars.
Matalas Hippie-Geschichte wird während des dreitägigen Matala Beach Festivals wiederbelebt.
