This video answers the questions: What is the difference between the ICD and the DSM? Which diagnostic manual is better? The ICD is the International Classification of Diseases and the DSM is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Both are used to define mental disorders and have lists of symptoms.

Thanks for doing your best to clarify the main differences between the ICD and the DSM. Reminds people that given the difference talking about diagnostic terms is only appropriate to use in clinical settings and when doing so working with someone who has learned a lot about the DSM first is very important in clinical settings too.

Hello Dr. Grande, glad you finally did this, thank you very much! It is a quite funny coincidence, too. I tossed and turn sleeplessly in bed this night, asking myself, if I should write a critical comment/asking you about the value of the DSM (You called it "just a book", I call it the BIBLE of clinicians, and I say this with discomfort and disgust).
Seeing how clinical diagnosing (and sadly also self diagnosing) has been submitted to that extent to this, a few weeks ago I searched for literature covering this topic in a critical fashion, but I didn't find to much.
Btw you are not exactly right in your assumption, that it is not that important outside the US, I actually had to learn. by. heart. every. single. category. in my tests at university. Would appreciate you doing more videos like this. Much love to you, E.

In Europe ICD is used in clinical practice but most research is done with DSM. But it is not that important since both groups are trying to make criteria similar.

Thanks Dr. Grande. I agree when wishing there was more biological markers with lab results that physicians could rely on when diagnosing only depression. When it comes to how many of lab tests are available to physicians because of hospital administrators and some physicians too I wish there was an entry in the DSM with the acronym IDC standing for I Don't Care. Might help some people stop from jumping to conclusions while being in too much of a hurry. Like when being in a hurry to get through the next patient appointment without asking any of those patients attending appointments at that clinic questions about slow changes in their energy levels and then ordering lung function tests for them while for example just down the street a large hospital like the Charles Camsell Hospital here in Edmonton Alberta Canada is being gutted of Asbestos insulation over several years close to single family homes where people have to live there 24/7 and 365 days a year. Which is why some people now in that neighborhood are getting lung Cancer now without ever having smoked themselves.
