The raw materials don't matter the medal it's self is worth a lot because it's an Olympic medal they aren't exactly common.

US Olympic athletes are also generally sponsored by a brand or have a scholarship from a major university

In the case of the Basketball team for example they’re all already millionaires

It really depends the countries, if you compete with the US, you don’t win as much money, since the US always wins a couple of golds, but if you win a gold for a countrie that has never won one, then you could earn way more money.

I had no idea gold medals weren’t gold but gold plated. Never bothered to look or check mean thinking about the size of it the medal would be worth a fortune if it was even 10k but I had no idea
