How to Choose Your Training Katana #Shorts

If you want to start training a katana budo (martial art), you will of course need to buy your own training katana (Iaito: zinc alloy katana). But how should you choose the right katana for you?

If take a look at this chart, you can see the different lengths expressed using the traditional measuring units, shaku (30.3cm), sun (3.03cm), and bu (0.303cm). So you can choose your katana based on this idea.

However, this standard could be different depending on the ryuha style or dojo. For example, Seki sensei said... Being able to handle a katana is the standard length for you is obvious. But of course the longer the katana you will be able to reach out farther, and it’s more difficult for you to handle it. So our recommendation is for you to start from the standard length, then gradually start using a longer katana if possible.

His movements are like water. So beautiful

I see, to quickly draw your katana, it should have a length that fits your arms length so you don't have to put in too much extra movement of your body to get it out of the Saya, but this also makes your attacks predictable so mastering a longer reach will be beneficial.
I wonder if there were Samurai using intentionally longer Saya with a shorter Katana inside to irritate the enemy

Seki sensei's method of using a longer katana for training kind of feels like how roman legionaries trained with a weighted pilum and shield

I use polypropylene training katana instead of zinc alloy ones because it allows me to practice forms and also to use it in hema sparring

Works ok as a general rule, but there's so much that can vary from person to person. Each practitioners strength, arm length, body type, etc can make a difference. Still, height is decent general place to start.

I've been watching you for a while I found your stuff entertaining and informative I am actually trying to learn blacksmithing but I also want to learn how to use weapons because I believe to make a good weapon you must know it's used and be able to use it yourself

Being a fan of weapons and martial arts, love your content. Hope someday i would buy a katana with a custom symbol carved on the blade near the hilt, but obviously before using it might need a wooden one to practice.😁

There have been times where I have asked myself this question. By the way I hope you don't mind but I actually screenshotted the table that you put up on the screen. Thank you for putting up that table and thank you for your explanation

I am very tall, 195 cm +, if I go by this chart my katana would be too difficult to handle. Right now my iaito is 2.55 shaku. Might go 2.6 when i eventually buy a nihonto.

I love the chart. Now I know how long my Katana should actually be instead of just buying a default sized one!

Interesting. For my Koryu we all have a standard Uchigatana shinken of 2.3 or 2.35 shaku. But when we practice Seitei Iaido we all use any size. I personally use my Iaito from Tozando and it's a 2.45 Shaku

Different styles come from or focus teachings from a certain era when swords were longer or shorter.

Oishi shinkage ryu kenjutsu has really long katanas. Muso jikiden eishin ryu iaido use roughly standard or shorter. It just depends. Standard size is a really good recommendation to start. Lots of places can easily supply these. It is much harder to find longer katana

Yes the idea is to buy 2 training katanas one being a standard length being somewhat shorter than your height and then a longer one which would surpass the one that's more obvious. But that would mean it'd have to be quite longer but not too long where it'd drag on the floor

Considering that chart my katana would be around 66cm of blade and 22 of handle, but as i remember usually the blades you can find in the stores are always around 70cm. By the way i am a lover of the tachi. I love that so curved blade.

Im 186cm tall and i train with a light blade in 2, 45 shaku .. i could also use up to 2, 55 shaku. But as a shodan in iaido its fine. Also as a jikkiden its normal to use a little shorter iato due to the noto
