Much easier to sew the two pieces together with a basting stitch, press open. Place the zipper over the seam, sew on both sides of zipper. Unpick the basting stitch. Done.

Best practice for sewists is to ALWAYS cut off your selvages. They are woven more tightly and differently than the rest of the fabric. This can cause puckering in your seams that you can't iron out. It might look like the puckers are goneas you iron, but as the fabric cools the puckers usually come back. You alsodon't want the holes that are in the selvages showing.

You can't go wrong cutting off the selvage. You might get away with leaving it on occasionally, but you don't want to spend a lot of time sewing something and then find that theselvage iscausing trouble.
