The Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to orbit the Sun. This period is known as a sidereal year, slightly different from the tropical year (365.2422 days), which tracks the cycle of seasons. This discrepancy wasn't accounted for in early calendars, causing a shift in dates over centuries. By 1584, the vernal equinox fell on March 10 instead of March 21. To correct this, Pope Gregory XIII commissioned the Gregorian calendar, a refinement of the Julian calendar, to realign the equinox and better synchronize with the seasons. This calendar adjustment also aimed to distinguish Easter from Passover.
