Yes it's completely realistic that Naruto creator is only worth 20 mil. People really underestimate how predatory the publishing deals are in Japan. There was a light novel comp sponsored by Kodansha and they let it slip in the terms of entry that you'd be signing away ALL RIGHTS just by entering. Most light novelists and Mangaka can't speak openly obviously due to contract but it's real bad. OEL TokyoPop authors here in the west 10 years ago was just the western version of how bad it is for Mangaka in Japan who don't know how to negotiate well (which is hard to do when you don't have an agent and a name). This is why so many mangaka end up with nothing but a tiny royalty while the publisher makes billions

We have to also mention that net worth is your income minus your expenses ( taxes, rent, food, cars etc) and japan is a really expensive country especially at tokyo . Also your income has two factors . 1 the total copies sold as passive and your monthly payment from pages as active . 2 is your contract with the publisher . For instance the creator of aot even though he has les copies sold than the naruto creator, he has twice the bet worth .

Its actually a legitimate question since there is no real fixed salary in the artistic field.
By being open about our salaries we can help other people not get scammed by their employers. Sometimes we are the ones being robbed and learning how other people deal with their money helps.

I thought Masashi Kishimoto would be worth more like 120 million... but I wonder what the average salary of managaks in Japan is if you take out the outliers like Eiichiro Oda, Akira Toriyama, etc... too lazy to Google...

probably 20 mil in the bank i don’t think it’s included how much he’s put into anime which has to be a lot for animations

Oda is I think 200 million but one piece is like worth 20.9 billion and I was like what but you do have to factor in the people they have to pay that work with them so I get it kinda
