Broaching Keyways in Cast Bronze Capstans Part 2

Показать описание
This is the second of three videos showing how I machine the internal keyways in two cast bronze capstans that were cast by Doug Jackson @SVSeeker IN this video I'll show how I use the Kearney & Trecker horizontal milling machine and a milling cutter to machine the slot in the custom machined broach bushing. I also show how I use gage blocks to accurately check slot widths.
Be sure to check out Doug's channel to see his journey about how to build a huge boat from the ground up. @SVSeeker

I literally screamed at my TV!!! I couldn't believe what I just seen!! Especially coming from Adam. You don't use anything abrasive of any sort on your gage blocks. You rub them on a paper notepad. I learned that back when I was 18 at my first job.

Awesome work as always Adam. Sad to see Doug Jackson reap the benefit's of a great person like you. He certainly does not deserve your kindness, skills and time. Thanks for sharing with us anyway.

I just made made a broach bushing for a job I did. I was referbing a reeves drive pulley. I have a lot of broaches and bushings but none would bit this pulley. My tolerances did not come out as close as yours but the plastic key I made fit great. Fun project. Thanks.

The SHAPE of the broach plug TURNED to be MILLED perfect. :)

Using a precision ground stone, it will not bite into the metal, it will only remove anything that protrudes from the surface. A question I do have, could you have used an end mill instead of the stagger tooth cutter to make the slot? if so, would it have taken longer? Thanks for sharing this Adam, always a pleasure to watch your episodes.

Adam, did you ever make handles for your big greenfield No. 24? It would be fun if you and Tom did some more tool comparisons. Those were really funny.
