My buddy was so hungover on a math test he didn't remember the equation for the volume of a sphere. So he worked it out from first principles, as you do. When he got the results the teacher had added that "you don't have to use four-dimensional spheres, three dimensions will do just fine".

I once made a completely weird and convoluted formula to complete a (fairly simple) math problem because I forgot the actual formula. (it was to find the solution to 2 equations)
My math teacher responded saying that she never would have come up with that.
Somehow the answer was correct.
