In my university, I asked s Japanese exchange student why he learnt German. He told me "it's because we were on the same side during WWII." Awkward silence on my side.

lmao, I don't think many English speakers realize just how strange Hitler's cadence sounds to German ears (and not just because of the Austrian accent). Dude always sounded like he was in the middle of hacking up a hairball during his speeches.
So when foreign actors try to do a regular German accent and end up emulating Hitler, it's utterly hilarious because it's basically like if some foreigners were going for generic American English in a movie and all the actors just did a Gilbert Godfrey impression.
