How to install foot-well LED Lights controlled using Dome light (Scion FRS)

In this tutorial on the HIGHSPEED channel, I go through how i installed LED lights under the dash and are controlled using the dome lighting. This means, that every time you unlock the car, or open the doors the foot-well lighting will turn on. Once you sit in the car, and plug the key in the lights will turn off, or when you lock the car. These look super awesome are simple to install. After this setup the lights will be powered using the dome lights and you do not have to manually turn them on/off.

The installation was done on Scion FRS, however the same steps can be applied to any car and model.

You could have attached the ground wire to the chassis somewhere, and added the wire in to the fuse box with a fuse jumper, the way you did it seems a little unsafe.

Don't do it like this. Completely wrong and unsafe. NEVER attach bare wire to light bulb terminals. You can have an arcing issue or a short/fire hazard. Again, NEVER do it this way. Plus this is way too much work anyhow. No reason to feed wire down your windshield pillars or snake it through the headliner. If you can't get a wiring diagram for your car, personally, I'd make the effort, there's two ways to do this. Some cars have modules that send positive power to dome lights after door trigger is activated. Cars like this will possibly have a fuse that says dome or interior lamps. You could test with a test light to see if power only comes out of this fuse if the door is open. Then you're set. Get an add-a-circuit and get your power from there and then just ground the lights. All being done at under dash level. If you can't tap a fuse then test which wires are positive and negative on the dome light harness. Unplug it and check. Make a note of which color is for which wire. See where they go. They may go down the left side pillar or right side pillar. See where they come out. Find the wires and tap into them with a t-tap and connect your led wires there. Clean and easy and most importantly, safe. Of course this works because he's getting power and ground from the bulb terminals. But where do you think those terminals get their power from? That's right, the wires coming from the harness. You may also have your dome light activated by a negative ground. Many dome lights work this way. It means the dome light always has power but only makes ground when the door opens. This grounds the circuit and allows the constant power already at the dome light to power the light. When the door closes the ground is broken and the bulb goes out. If this is how your doors work you need to attach the led ground to this wire and then attach led positive wire to a constant hot power source. You can still use your dome light wires but you have to make sure you wire it correctly. You can use an add-a-circuit fuse tap for this as well at the fuse panel. This way you're not putting any additional draw on the existing dome light circuit. Although LEDs hardly draw any power so you'll most likely be fine pulling a little extra draw from the dome. And if you really wanted to get crazy you could add relays and still have the door power the lights automatically but it'll give you the option to turn them separately with a switch or use the switch that some led companies provide that allow all kinds of customization. Either way, just do it right. Just skip all this ghetto crap and do it correctly. This is an accident waiting to happen. Hit a bump or if this gets loose over time and you have a hot wire that can short out and blow your fuse, melt your wire harness or worse. Again, don't do this. Buy yourself a multimeter, test light and research and learn how to use them. Learn how to wire relays, add circuits etc... We live in the information age. Accurate Info is at your fingertips. This channel is a joke.

correct me if i'm wrong, but wiring to a fuse box will only give it 12v constant power and if you go to the door pin, it'll only turn on when that certain pin is disengaged.. so wiring to the actual dome light is the best way to get the lights to come on when any door opens or is unlocked. only thing i would have done differently was find out which wire in that harness is giving the power and tap into it with a safe snap connector

Thanks for the clip!
Wasn't it easier to power the extra-lights from the fuse dedicated to the interior lights?

Thanks. That seems super easy versus taking it thru the firewall

can you do this with led pod mounts ? whenever you unlock your car they turn on for a bit

Hooking it up this way makes it so that you cannot turn on the lights while driving unless the dome light itself is turned on right?

I would like my Led to be on when I’m driving and door open during ignition off. Is there way that I can tap both the ignition and dome light at the same time to achieve that?

Is there a way to have this setup (lights come on and off with the doom light, I like the fuse box option vs running all the wire) AND the LEDs would come on/off when the ignition is turned on/off? Basically, is it possible to have 2 separate "triggers" to turn and off the LEDS lights?

How would one go about tapping into an ignition power source inside the door for a door light? I have a KIA optima that has the slot for an LED strip just above the door compartment but my LX doesn't come with the light so i would have to install it myself.

How would this work in case you wanted the lights to stay on while driving?

Great video, very simple and easy to do just what i wanted. Question: Is there a way I can install led strip lights that light up when opening the door (the way you showed) and also be music controlled?

Wow. This is actually more simple than I thought. I keep seeing the lights that you have to plug into the cigarette lighter in order for them to turn on but that’s wack. This is way better. More proffesional too
