Yes actually, its called the U-Wing and was primarily used by the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War and is seen doing gun-runs on AT-AT Walkers in "Rouge One: A Star Wars Story"

Kfz. 251/1D Half-Tracks all at the Battle of Hoth?

Really, what you want is an A-10C for close air support. The Hercules AC-130 is great, but as you noted, you really need a separate pilot and gunner to make it work.

Baron, to quote general Maximillian Veers; "My Lord, the fleet has moved out of lightspeed. COMSCAN has detected an energy field protecting an area of the sixth planet of the Hoth system. The field is strong enough to deflect any bombardment."
Shields in the Star Wars universe allow slow moving objects - ie, AT-AT walkers, troops etc - to pass through. Fast moving objects such as starfighters, bombers, energy bolts, proton torpedoes and the like are deflected or destroyed. The rebel shield generator wasn't taken out until the Blizzard Force ground assault team reached Echo base therefore rendering any fighter assault useless.
However one looks at it, the battle was a triumph for the empire! The rebel SCUM were completely routed, much of their equipment had to be abandoned and many of their of their personnel were obliterated by the blockading Star Destroyers of Lord Vader's Death Squadron. A great day!

I agree with the guy below me that the reason the empire did not have air superiority is because Rebels had their Shield activated but there's another reason as well the reason that the Empire also could not use air superiority is that their Tie fighters were not equipped for the extremely low temperatures if you had noticed in the start of the movie The Rebels had mentioned that the airspeeders were not equipped for the cold weather so that's why the Empire only used ground superiority and one of the reasons that the Empire won is just plot for one and another reason that they won is they did have some pretty strong ground superiority it's almost like fighting off an entire German tank regiment and entire five or six battalions of light infantry with a couple of Spitfires with like a handful of light troops so yeah
