I get the vibe that Black is genuinely a good person and a good step dad who respects Scott. The problem is that Scott and Yellow can't seem to get past whatever caused their separation unless the kids are present.

It was that moment, when Yellow starting harping on Blue for being 15 minutes late and then when he tried to defend himself said they shouldn't argue in front of the children, that he was reminded why he divorced her.

This is probably one of the more realistic ways of cordial exes and new marriages with kids(only speaking from experience), despite this only being a cartoon with numerous ridiculous situations.

It's odd because when you mix black and yellow together, it has a dark green color to it so the kids may not even be blue kids

Black was actually inviting Scott. The 2 were friends for a long time and Scott knew Black liked yellow and told him its ok to date his ex. It took a while but Black finally did ask her out. Scott is now dating White, a shy girl from Scott's work who Black gave confidence to ask Scott out (not knowing it was him. She kept it vague who she liked). The kids actually see Black as an uncle more than a new dad, though they do call him 2nd daddy sometimes. So Black's not the issue. Its probably Scarlet, Scott's ex and Yellow's best friend who is the cause.

People probably know blue and yellow mixed together makes green.
But do you know what color yellow and black mixed together makes? Green!
