Miley Cyrus sued for allegedly copying Bruno Mars on Grammy-winning hit ‘Flowers’

Miley Cyrus was sued for copyright infringement after allegedly copying Bruno Mars in the creation of her Grammy-winning hit, “Flowers.”

Per documents obtained by TMZ, Tempo Music Investments claims Cyrus’ 2023 smash single shares “many musical similarities” to Mars’ 2012 ballad “When I Was Your Man.”

The investment platform — which claims to own a share of the copyright for Mars’ track — alleges that the chorus, harmony, melody, chord progressions and lyrics of “Flowers” were “intentionally” taken from the “24K Magic” hitmaker’s song.

Mars, however, is not named as a plaintiff in the filing.

bruno mars my behind. the song flowers is a rip off of Rob Thomas' song "Lonely No More". Rihanna plagiarized that song too with the song "Unfaithful"

Maybe I don’t have the ear for it but I loved both songs and didn’t think they were related. Granted I didn’t/don’t look at chord progressions. Flowers, holding hands, and talking on the phone have to be some of the most abused cliches for romance though. I love the uplifting Miley song - but it does seem like the chorus is a response to the Bruno song even though the theme is the opposite. I don’t hear the similarities just read them in the lyrics for me 😅

Pretty sure Flowers was influenced by Bruno's song, just read the chorus.
Bruno: That I should've bought you flowers.
Miley: I can buy myself flowers.

Bruno: And held your hand.

Bruno: When I had the chance
Miley: Say things you don't understand

Supposedly Liam dedicated the song "When I was your man" to Miley, so it does make sense.
The thing is both of them are aware of this and Miley asked permission from Bruno but it's the record company that is suing and not Bruno. She will probably lose this.

Dig out Ace of Base’s “It’s a Beautiful Life” and prepare to have your mind blown. That song precedes both of those songs by decades.

Singers borrow chords, melodies, and stuff from each other all the time.

This lawsuit goes nowhere.

Let’s call it the “Sheeran Rule.”

I'm willing to bet you can find some interpolations in Bruno's song, although more plausible they'd be unintentional. I'm also willing to be there is more than one interpolation in "Flowers." Should make for an interesting case if either of my wagers come to fruition. Even the concept and theme are similar. But if her song has several other "borrowed" elements, rights to claim could get tricky, or too small of a slice to be worth the hassle. It's also interesting that an investment group is behind this. Their equivalent of having a hit record, a big lawsuit.
