A morning mooch around to see what remains of this place, Originally a BR Engine shed yard, it was taken over by preservationists in 1969 until they abandoned the place in 1991 due to a landowner dispute. A fair number of locomotives were at the site until its closure 19 years ago..

I used to volunteer at the railway museum in the late 80s. I can't believe how it's gone back to nature. The Great Central engine shed is still standing. They knew how to build stuff back then.
Thanks for posting!

In the mid 80"s I visited Dinting on a flea market day and purchased for the princely sum of £1, a baby oak tree about 4 inches tall in a flowerpot. The lady selling them had grown them from acorns. That tree is now 35ft high in my garden in Offerton.Joe

my late father was the last engine driver at Dinting Loco Shed..After 25 years on BR he was made redundant when this part of the network closed.Myself and my brothers had many a ride on the footplate during school holidays, even having a go at the controls.
His name was Jim Booth.Another driver was Bert Turner who later became Alderman Turner and Mayor of Glossop.

This site closed because the landlord wanted to build a hotel for the comonwealth games, unfortunatly the railway osicety of which i was a member only had a peppercorn tenancy and so he turfed us off. he never got planning permission as the land was unfit for development. so the railway died, the locos went to KWVR and the volunteers hard work over thirty years went for a crap. so much for preservation. very sad.

I remember frequently coming here with my old man when it was privately owned riding a small steam train with carriage and watching the BR class 304's pass through the single line section of the station, also i remember him and the Wild Bunch western society which he was a member did a small show before it all closed down permanently, sad to see part of my childhood gone just like that.

dinting railway centre  what memories used to go regular in the 80s i still walk round how nature has reclaimed it back. the shed, concrete walkway which were in the exhibition hall are still recognisable, i still have the scots guardsman cup and photocards i bought from the shop in 1980  i am from hadfield just a short walk to where it is. the shop was at the back of the exhibition hall and still lies where it was pulled down. great memories of a once proud museum.

What a sorry state! I remember it well, as a kid, and yes, I took my fist footplate ride on Bahamas there. No pics of the miniature railway on the hill? Excuse me if I go and cry, now. Can't be more than 15/20 odd years!

If you go up the hill behind the large red brick building you have a very overgrown miniature railway track too.

Acording to my Ian Allen Combined Volume, Dinting was a sub shed of 9G Gorton though I believe it was originally an LNER shed. I visited Dinting many times in the 1970s and remember 6115 Scots Guardsman being restored in the shed shown. Other resident locos, amongst others, were Jubilee 5596 Bahamas, A4 60019 Bittern and the Robinson O1. I also remember a visit by V2 60800 Green Arrow which was steamed up and down the yard. Nearby Guide Bridge station was the starting point of many steam specials to Sheffield and beyond. It's a shame to see it derelict after so much time and effort was put into its development by volunteers

There's an auction in Matlock in a couple of weeks and one of the lots is this piece of land. How wonderful it would be if someone were to buy it and reopen the museum. I'm too young to remember it in much detail.

I spent most weekends there as a kid as my dad was a train enthusiast and his friend was a restorer there I remember the Scotsman the behamas and the Leander which I rode the footplate on have many photos of this in its day including turning the trains on a hand turntable near the viaduct still speak to one of the restoration team which is now a fireman at Keighley and worth valley restoration society near bury.

More recent videos show the site has continued to go down hill. No chance it will ever be reopened. Many of those that built it up are no longer with us.

I totally agree, I was doing a walk for Help for Heros last weekend which envolved a section of old railway line. The only part you can walk on is about 500 metres long and the only part that hasn't had a housing estate built on it. Ridiculous.

Shame about these places, so much history lost, would be nice if this place was bought and restored into like a house or something..

Nice vid, would of been amazing if you found some footage of it when it was a working shed then faded into how it is now.

I spent several summers in England when I was a child, visited Dinting a few times. Dad saved some old literature for me, I have it in one of my train collection boxes.
