What's special about Duran is his style translated through multiple weight classes. That's how skilled he was. He blended old school and modern boxing. Props to Ray Arcel for also not trying to change Duran into a conventional boxer.

Fighting sailors on the docks of Panama aged just seventeen and winning every fight. He did this to prevent his mother and sister from going into prostitution. Long live the Hands of Stone. Great video.

Duran also had the benefit of more than a century of experience in the corner with him with Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown. All the old, forgotten skills from the era of 45 round titles fights and the Golden Age between WWI and WWII, when baseball and boxing were the only two viable sports for the pool of professional athletes, was at Duran's disposal.

Roberto Duran in his long running prime was almost impossible to defeat because he was so difficult to hit clean and his punches were so devastating. When he was king of the lightweight division for over a decade, he was defeated by another brilliant Panamanian fighter in Esteban De Jesus in what was to become a trilogy of bouts, Duran won the next two by TKO I believe. The only fighters to really beat him in his prime when he was on form (although he was beaten by lesser fighters when he neglected to train properly), were Sugar Ray Leonard who boxed rings around him in their second fight, Marvelous Marvin Hagler who he went the full 15 championship rounds with doing very well in as close fought match up but ultimately getting a unanimous loss, and finally being knocked out cold by Thomas “Hitman” Hearns with an unbelievable right hand rocket of a shot. However he fought the other fabulous 3 when he was out of his own weight division giving away quite an advantage to his bigger opponents. It was his supreme skills in not getting hit clean and his ability to carry his power up through the higher weight classes that make Duran one of THE greatest boxers of all times and for me in the top ten easily.

The greatest lightweight in the history of boxing and one of the pound 4 pound greats El cholo for a guy that turned pro in 1967 at 118 pounds to win the middleweight title in 1989 amazing

The epitome of a pro boxer, the nicest man you could meet outside the ring, a vicious, harbour shark in side of it.

4 Kingz Era was so talent rich. Duran the master infighter. Hearns the master outfighter. Benitez a defensive wizard.

One of a kind, I got hit hard many times in the ring, but Roberto Duran hit me the hardest, with a body shot I felt for days, poor Davie Moore.😂

Thanks you for this video skillr, watching Duran make me see the difference between old fighters and new fighters, Duran moved like a god. In the Nigel Benn sparring footage his defense was so subtle it looked like Benn was missing on purpose

His framing and grappling were so underrated.

For me, Roberto Duran and Joe Frazier have always been the two most exciting fighters to watch - they were both superbly talented, and went all-out every second in the ring!

Fun fact immediately after Duran’s fight with Hagler Duran walked over to Ray Leonard who was commenting and told him you box Hagler, you beat him
