I lost my Daddy to stage 4 lung and brain cancer in 2013. i will always be a Daddy's girl. I got there to late to say goodbye what hurts the most is he was there for my 1st breath and i wasn't there for his last. very tough to overcome that i was not there when he passed i was stuck in a traffic jam. he passed 20 minutes before i made it to his house.

Guys, just a little background. James and his father were both officers in the British military. This was recorded as you see it. It was the first time James had actually sung this to his dad. His recording company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted it to be real and full of genuine emotions because at the time, he thought his father was about die from Stage 4 kidney cancer, so you can understand his voice wavering a little towards the end. Honestly, I have no idea how he managed to get this done, but what a wonderful job he made of it. Great reactions you guys. Same as everyone else who watches this video for the first time!

So glad you reacted to this song. James, father who is in the video with him also was diagnosed with cancer and was going to pass away, this is why James wrote this song as a goodbye to his father while he was here to hear it instead of waiting until he was gone. Later though they found a donor and he is fine now.

This was written by James after his father was told it was highly unlikely that he would get the life-saving transplant he desperately needed. The good news is that only a few weeks after the song and video (yes that is James' dad) was released a donor was found and thankfully a couple of years on, his Dad is still alive. I love the song but for me, the fact that his dad witnessed the love and emotion from his son is beautiful. My dad died suddenly and I wish I'd been able to tell him just how wonderful he was to me and my children in such a lovely way. 😍

When he sang, "its my turn to chase the monsters away, " I started bawling like a baby. Dear god what a song. My first time hearing it too.

Both James and his dad are ex military guys but when they filmed this, they hadn't found a donor for his terminal illness and James and filming crew were bawling. Everyone cried except the old man who scolded them saying " stop, I am not dead YET" Legend!!! Lol I am so glad they found a donor after this song was out and he is stable now. 🙏 I miss my dad so much RIP.💔

Your son will be so blessed having you as his father. It won’t be easy at times but there are few things in this world more important than raising and loving your children.

It is now August 17, 2024. I had not encountered this song until last year. I'm 64. My dad was the monster when I was a kid. He beat me relentlessly, I was terrified to come home from school, every day. He died in 2011 and I felt nothing. Not joy, not relief, not sorrow. Nothing. So watching this and hearing the phrase "There's no need to forgive, no need to forget. I know your mistakes and you know mine" that phrase grabs me by the guts. It never occurred to me he had his demons too. I managed to admit there was something wrong with me in the late eighties and I got help. In his reality there was no help to get. No one to tell. All he had was his rage, and that never comes from nowhere. After this song, I can manage some forgiveness, and perhaps some love and understanding. I cry like a baby every single time I hear this (especially when seeing a reaction like yours). Hearing your story about how good your dad was and that he didn't have it good when he was a kid, I'm glad he stopped the cycle. That is a Herculean task, to overcome his childhood. I hope he found some love and forgiveness for his dad.

James has said that everyone in the studio was crying during this recording, only his father was calm saying "Why is everyone crying? I'm stilll here."

I read the story behind this beautiful song. That was his dad and was diagnosed with kidney cancer I think 2017. HE was given only a few months to live but I think it was a distant cousin that gave him a kidney. The last I heard about him, he was doing fine. The song was recorded only a few days after he was diagnosed. Love your reaction to this song and don't apologize for shedding tears for a loved one. Lost my dad when I was 13 and I'm now 74 and still miss him. Love you guys!
