I've been watching anime all my life; I'm more than qualified to be your teacher.

Shoko the Japanese guy's sensei showed some reverse grip moves that work when you draw your weapon really close to your opponent, deal one strike and then switch to normal grip. You better give it a watch. It is very spesific to a circumstance and his sensei also agrees reverse grip is useless in normal combat with a katana or sword.

I love that this way of holding a sword is so fucking cool that everyone's just trying to find a way to make it work.

I think you meant the bare MINIMUM, sir.

David, David, David, you clearly haven't seen the reverse grip tactics lie in footwork.

As standard in combat, shift your blade in reverse, prepared to re-engage with your opponent who clearly has more reach than you. Just as your opponent raises an eyebrow in confusion, you sheathe your blade and engage in a five hundred yard dash in the other direction. Haven't died yet!

Sounds like the AMAZING Randy's levitation experiment. Just step out his window and levitate. Don't worry he's only a few dozen stories up. He never had anyone try proving they could levitate.

In order to prove reverse grip is good you must randomly assault a random unwilling battle partner(make sure to give them a sword)

We all need the dedication of this man, to go through these lengths to comprehend the opposing side of an argument, and refine an opinion as objectively as possible.

There is a way to make reverse grip work though. First you put your sword arm forward, thumb facing up and sword tip facing towards the ground, then rotate the sword vertically until the sword tip is pointing up parallel to your thumb, and finally, adjust your thumb for a more secure grip. Now you have better reach and mobility!

I think what you are looking for is the japanese technique called seppuku. This technique effords a helping hand with a sword held in a normal grip, but I would say, for the main practitioner, a reverse grip is preferable.

In my opinion reverse grip works for one specific intention, when you want to shorten your angle in closer quarters than your blade length would otherwise allow but keep your tip speed at lethal acceleration. It works with two handed or bastard swords and it is not "true reverse grip" but a hybrid. I also think it works for transitioning into half sword, which again is about shortening angles. I think it is much like the various guards and positions in swordsmanship as in it is transitional, not something you fight in.
