Son: How are IVF babies made?
Dad: Well, when a test-tube and a Petri-dish love each other very much...

Loved the video. My wife and I did IVF (4 rounds) and are anxiously expecting our first child due in February. IVF changes very rapidly, so I wanted to add something that is now being implemented. For many IVF patients, a single embryo transfer at the blastocyst phase is encouraged due to one massive achievement. That is vitrification. In this process, healthy blastocysts at day 5, 6, and sometimes 7 are vitrified (frozen using a special technique that almost eliminates damage ice crystals would otherwise have on the cell walls). Whereas most IVF rounds were "fresh transfers" in the past, vitrification has the benefit of 1. Allowing fewer multiples (other than identical twins). 2. a couple month break between stimulation and transfer, which may allow mothers to hormonally return to a normal cycle. 3. achieve multiple children over many years with just one stimulation cycle. Especially for women with diminished ovarian reserve, that can be the difference between success and failure. We are so very happy, and can't help but thanking all the generations of scientists that contributed to our coming family.

My mother's fertility issues were pretty severe so the doctors had to IVF waaaay more eggs than usual.
First time, they implanted 10 eggs.
None survived.
Second time, they inplanted 12 eggs.
One survived that time; Me!

As an only child from IVF, I can confirm.

Took my parent's two attempts and they ended up with triplets, which include me. I or my brother and sister wouldn't be alive without ivf

I think IVF is fascinating, and it is amazing how advances in medical science has led to this. The only disappointing things about this video are that people are still hating on Olivia and the comments about adoption. I'm biased as an adoptee, but I just want to put out the point of view that people who have problems conceiving maybe should not be encouraged to adopt more than the already are.

I was adopted when I was less than 12 months, so I do not have all the emotional/psychological baggage of the typical adoptee. However, it is really great to feel wanted, to really be wanted for you. As a single over forty years old woman on a teacher's salary, my mom was always adoption first for some strange, wonderful reason, and the great thing about adoption is *not being someone's second choice*.

Adoption is great, but I'd rather not have bio-preferential parents being momentarily convinced into adopting.

When she said cleavage phase it reminded me of when I took a test and it pointed to that area of the cell and I just wrote "cleavage" and my teacher wrote "this is a cell, we're not talking about breasts" I lost points because I didn't specify cleavage furrow

When it comes to implanting embryos, do the doctors talk about this with the parents? As in "Would you rather implant fewer embryos but have a decreased chance of successful pregnancy, OR would you rather implant more embryos but increase your chances of getting quadruplets?" It seems like it would be helpful information for the parents and based on what they want or how much time they're willing to spend, they can choose the number of embryos accordingly.

Or is this not an option? Maybe having quadruplets with this method is rare or it's difficult to determine the chances. I'm not sure.

I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for that doctor and honestly that's kind of fucking crazy to me that just 40 years ago (twice my age) this was invented

i would like to see scishow in 4k, then the effect would be completely gone

also, do an episode on the effect of the shirt.

The third mitochondrial parent bit was very interesting.

Lowkey is not against the idea of some sort of tax or regulation on the amount of children people can have. There's too many people, or maybe some sort of increased incentive for adoption.

The cynic in me has to point out: Maybe serious genetic conditions are on the rise because people that shouldnt be having kids are now having kids, and those kids dont die off like they would otherwise

its very interesting to watch the body language of the hosts, especially the movement of their arms and heads.
