A year or two ago I would have felt he was being too arrogant and short sighted on this, but if theres one thing I've noticed in the last year, its that when someone's religious beliefs and politics clash, its usually the politics that give way to the religious belief, not vice versa

You know Marx points out that the freedom of religion doesn’t liberate anyone from religion, but only presupposes that people will be subject to the tyranny of religion. Otherwise there would be no need for a law enforcing a person’s right to choose which flavor of religious tyranny they prefer. A truly secular state would not legislate the freedom of religion but the freedom of intimate conviction. For how can any truly be free from the tyranny of their own intimate convictions?

Religion will be one of the kost difficult things to work through for many in the US. A struggle worth fighting for sure. But one of the most difficult i think we have in front of us. On a personal note, i accepted all other aspects of marxism pong ago. Class struggle, dictatorship of the Proletariat, long before i was finally able to accept the necessity for leaving the spiritual behind and accepting materialism.

Fascinating! However, this seems to contradict his earlier statements from his work 'Socialism and Religion, ' where he said religious people should be allowed to join the party so long as they are quiet about it. Or something along those lines, it's been a while since I last read it.

If there was one thing that prevents me from being a traditional Marxist leninist, it's these statements. Oppression of a religion on other religions and the ceaseless opression of the state on religion has no practical differences. Ideologically they may be different, but in the real world they have the same results. Believing in a god, a church, or a practice of spirituality is in no way incomgruent with (and often in favor of) struggle against the oppression of workers, colonisation and imperialism, and fascism. Not every religious view is as socially conservative as Russian Orthodoxy, not even the rest of the Orthodox Church. I think lenin was definitely shaped by the dominance of that religious movement in Russian society. Even as a very devoted Christian I find the idea of church control over any part of the government abhorrent, even to the point I don't think I as an individual should be in governing power. But for the state itself to disallow me would be nothing short of outright oppression. It is one of the very few things that make me lean far more towards anarchism than traditional communism.

As a Christian Socialist this saddens me, as I like Lenin a lot. Sure, the Church was corrupt, but Christianity can still be a force for good.

I’m very curious if he would’ve felt as strongly about various folk beliefs like those of the Yukaghir. Obviously he wouldn’t believe any of it but it’s also not the same as Christianity, or Islam in terms of how it influences people.
