So sorry Lyn.. so sad that you lost this old, majestic plant, and heartbreaking to hear this is one that you are especially attached to! In any case, thanks very much for sharing it with us, because as sad as it is, it is also educational to see a video of how different types of decay in a plant can look. For those of us with less experience and less plants, it's a way to learn. The bottom part looks very strange indeed: Tim said it reminded him of the type of mould on an orange, but to me it looks like the type of mould on blue cheese. Looks like something that's been a while in the making.. Hopefully someone will see this video and will be able to identify what it is exactly and how it could have happened. I hope Lucy can comfort you!

Don't worry about needing to have only happy videos Lyn, it is not realistic. It is hard to loose plants and frustrating when you don't even know how it happened. The Mamillaria may have been too old to fight off a pathogen. So sorry.

So heartbreaking to lose a plant you have had for so long! I am just going into my 2nd year as a cactus owner and I cannot imagine how it feels to lose a plant as old as that! I sincerely hope you don't lose any more. But thank you for showing us the bad that can happen. It helps to inform us all what to look out for.

That is such a shame, Lyn. So sorry you lost this one 😢 I lost one of my Astrophytum asterias the other day. I can’t blame the winter for that because it was indoors. Was fine one day and then the next I noticed it was black around the base with white mould growing on it. Hopefully none of us lose any more. Thank you for sharing with us, Lyn. Have a lovely evening from Edith & myself to you and Hans ❤️🌵☀️🌺🌸🌼🏜

Oh Lyn I'm so sorry! My heart just sank as I watched this video. It is so heartbreaking to lose any of our plants but especially the ones that have been with us for so long. It's nice that you had Hans there to do that for you though and Lucy to try to help cheer you up. I really hope this is the last of the losses this year🤞 let's hope for better days ahead 💚

Hey Lynn! I’m really sorry to hear this!!! I too have lost so many plants from a Coldsnap I had in early November I wasn’t expecting. The temperatures went down to 10°F, so I started moving all of my plants in which obviously took a few hours, but I had planned on keeping them in my enclosed patio like I did the year before, and just lighting fires in the wood-burning stove when It would get very cold, but I didn’t have fire with me at the time and wasn’t prepared, so after moving them all inside, I immediately started seeing cold damage within a week or 2, and now that it is spring more and more continue to die! I probably have lost half of my collection! So I know how you feel, that’s very sad! Even worse, my plants suffered from being inside without all the light they are used to! They actually did very well the previous year, when I would go out there and light a fire, I just didn’t feel like having to do that this year, so all of the plants that didn’t make it are stretched and look weird, because they were starved for light. I had them all by the windows, but I guess it still wasn’t enough light! So I suspect I will have more losses as time goes by! I am hoping though, that when I move them outside for good, this spring, that they will grow compact again?? do you know if they will? I had moved them outside but moved them back in because we were having nighttime temperatures in the low 40s again this week.! and I am wondering when I should start watering?! I was thinking about putting them outside today because we are having some rain and they haven’t had water all winter! But we are still having nighttime temperatures in the low 40s do you think it’s OK to do the first watering? Our daytime temperatures are in the 70s? I looked for your videos to see if you did your spring watering yet. I just hate to lose more plants! And I am so nervous with everything that’s already happened! And again I’m sorry to see that you’ve lost so many as well !!Sending you love 💕❤️- Anna

Oh Lyn, I'm so sorry for the enormous and very scary loss of your beautiful Mammillaria! 😢 As Hans kept cutting I kept hoping the cactus would be a strong solid green color. But it wasn't and like you both said it's what it is and it's reality. I still can't get over how many cacti you loss with so much sentimental value the last six months. 💔 Sending you and Hans peace, love and strength to get through this terrible situation. I hope your weekend gets better from your friend in Georgia!
Also, on a good note, I love the pants Hans was wearing. Very cool!

So sad you lost your plant. A friend of mine had some bugs nest and breed in her cactus. I believe it was either spiders or scorpions. And when all the babies were ready to hatch, they all came out through a similar hole that you have on yours. Her cactus also perished in that incident. So it could be a similar situation with your mammillaria.

Your poor mamillaria, I was on the edge of my seat hoping that it was salvageable. I really felt for you when it was all the way through . I can imagine the distress of loosing a plant that’s been loved and raised by you for so many years. Gutted for you, I hope winter 23/24 will be less disastrous for your collection. Bah I hate it when plants die

Oh my gosh, Lyn! This is so scary to see! I’ve lost quite a lot of plants these last few months, some favorites and some sentimental ones. I know how hard this is, I can’t imagine losing a plant I’ve had for as long as you’ve had this one. Sending you hugs, and there’s always room for one more plant! You did your best. ❤️
