Local file versioning without git could get expensive disk wise. What's the maximum file size supported for this feature?

How does timeline work under the hood? Is it just a workspace cache file or is an actual persistent VCS like git used
I'm assuming it only works with actions taken in vs and isn't able to pull in an actual file history

Is there a way to get like a file history branches system ? I hate it when I undo to copy some old code, type a letter by accident and can't redo. Is that possible with fille history ?
