Mike's E-Flite Timber Crash Repair and Diagnosis, ESC Overheat Tips

preview_player
Показать описание
This plane went down suddenly without warning of any kind with No Power or Controls. ESC is slightly under rated for this plane.
Amp draw at full throttle draws almost capacity of the ESC.
With the sealant in the ends of the esc, it cannot cool efficiently under warm weather conditions. Use of Corrosion-X is ideal for this situation. Watch and see.

I ALWAYS open the cover on my ESC, there isnt any reason to pack those with silicone except water egress from flying on a lake, they should have never closed up the ends. Not enough air flow. Sad that so many of those planes are ending up scrap. I would for sure add a higher rated ESC if using the larger cell battery. The Maule also has a smaller ESC than what I would use in a larger cell application. Turnigy is my go to ESC for Dynam and Any ESC change. I have NEVER had an issue with them.

Very nice. Came here because I'm in the process of repairing my TT 1.5. It amazes me how badly broken these foam planes can be yet still be repaired and gotten to fly near good as new.

Gluing a propeller is very dangerous. I would never do this!

Nice to actually see someone repairing a crashed plane rather than toss the thing. I have fixed my Apprentice many times. Its not perfect but thats not even the point. Those people that toss every plane drive me nuts. Many can be repaired, but instead get scrapped. Using boiling water, expoxy, foam tac, elemers glue, super glue and spackling can fix an otherwize badly damaged plane that may not look new, but still fly as ggod if not better than the original.

This is one of the worst continuing problems. Just about every plane from the big distributors comes the same way, the esc is ok for a moderate amperage but well below the max that you're probably experience when you fly that particular plane.

Skip I have one more question for ya. Where did you remount the esc? I am going to attempt one more flight/crash with this esc that came with it but as I’m putting it back together I was wondering if I should mount the esc underneath the battery bay. Any info is greatly appreciated

Today was my first flight I bought a used timber from kijiji.ca it looked brand new. My instructor took it for the first flight and 2 min into the flight everything stopped and the plane crashed. The prop broke, the wing cracked and the front of the plane kind off squashed. We didn't check the heat on the esc, but could that be the reason? Immediately after the crash the light were not turning on and not power was going through. Any suggestions what went wrong?

Great rebuild ! Thanks for ideas about Rebuilding! I like to use hot glue gun.
Keep them in the air!

Great video 👍. Got a lot of good advice from you. Hope I don't have to use them. 😀

I cant win skip...lol. So I get the timber all back together and she look GOOD and CG is on point. So I do all surface tests and would you know it, my throttle cut I assigned to toggle switch H is missing. It should still be under warranty so I Hope horizon at the least replaces the switch. All of my fixed wings are programmed into this transmitter so my fleet is grounded until further notice

skip, you are a magician
I crashed my timber but damage to fuse was so bad I needed to buy a replacement, can you tell me where the esc goes exactly and in what direction ? and how should I slice the esc open to get better ventilation into it .

Thanks

What is the method of removing the silicon from the ESC? Just cut and pry the stuff off?

Skip, WOW! I have had the same problem last night. Flight along fine, put landing Flaps down, and lost complete control, driving my timber right into the ground ripping the cowl and landing gear square off. Did you use foam tack or CA to repair this? I couldn’t imagine a repair of that nature without either gorilla glue or hot glue

I never have an esc problem with this plane, probably because I am in Canada and have no issue with high temperature. I normally use a hot glue gun for the nose repair. However, I will replace the whole fuselage after another crash.
