AMOS 1:6-8 ... A BLISTERING SERMON FROM AMOS THE PROPHET AGAINST THE MAN-STEALING PHILISTINES!

Preached upstairs in my little Bible Portion "Booklet Room." Just before leaving for a week of Revival in Illinois. Goliath, the Giant who challenged Almighty God and His young servant David, was a Philistine. But his hometown, Gath, is no longer of significance during Amos' ministry! It is not even mentioned in this list of Philistine cities. God judges sin, folks!

There really is nothing new under the sun. Human trafficking has been a problem since Bible times. Money, greed, and selfishness continues today. Satan is still using the same bag of tricks, but God is still in control! This chapter should be called vengeance is mine saith the Lord! Have a great day Preacher.

Great study Dr. Bagwell! God says in verse 6 that he will not change His mind about judgment. Verse 6 is also an example of human trafficking. They stole the people and sold them to Edom. This is why the Lord is upset with them. Gaza is a Philistine city. Philistia is a pentapolis of 5 different cities. The Philistines were the most persistent enemy of Israel. There are 4 Philistine cities mentioned in these verses (Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon & Ekron). Gath is the only one not mentioned in the pentapolis. Gath had lost prominence at the time Amos was written. "Saith"/אָמַר/'âmar. "Dabar" is the other Hebrew word used for speaking. This is the logics or mechanics of the message itself. "Amar" emphasizes how the message is communicated. There is no smile on God's face, he is upset. There is a numerical sequence in these verses. "For three transgressions and for four". Three plus four equals seven. Seven is completion. God is done, his patience is exhausted and judgment is coming. "Turn away"/שׁוּב/shûb/to do a 180 turn. "Carried away captive"/גָּלָה/gâlâh/to uncover, discover, reveal, show. They would deport a whole nation and when they took over that nation they would strip their captives naked. They did this to shame them and embarrass them. They did it to break their will. "Whole"/שָׁלֵם/shâlêm. These cities were at peace and then they were attacked and sold as slaves. The Edomites are relatives and descendants of Esau. They hate Israel with a passion. The Edomites are making money. It is all about the money. God says He will send a fire on their walls for selling them to the Edomites in verse 7. In verse 8 we see that God often judges with fire. "Perish"/אָבַד/'âbad. "Lord"/אֲדֹנָי/'ădônây. Joel chapter 3 verse 4, 5 & 6 mentions this human trafficking. Thank you so much for these lessons! They are such a blessing!
