SOLD

Here’s a locket ring handmade in 18-carat gold from about 1880. It’s in wonderful, unworn condition.

Its larger-than-usual dimensions make it suitable for a woman with bigger hands or for a man to wear. In fact, it was probably originally meant for a man, given its nautical allusions of ropes and knots – popular symbols of attachment and betrothal in Victorian times.

I usually offer complimentary resizing but this jewel is probably better left as is, though it could, at a push, be made smaller (but not larger).

The ring offers a trompé l’œil effect: the rope band appears so realistic but it doesn’t bend as rope would.

And I love the sturdy locket compartment. I always get a thrill from jewels with a concealed locket – and I know many other antique jewellery lovers feel the same way.
