I have yet to find any reliable documentation or video verification of an alligator doing 30 mph. I've found online claims of everything from 9, 10, 11, 15, 20, 30, and 35, but all of the video evidence suggests they are able to go about 10 for short distances.

Even so, that means they can cross the length of a car in about 1 second. The threat radius from an alligator, especially in muddy terrain, is bigger than you think, even if they're not going to be chasing you down on a moped.

Keep in mind, by short bursts, he means 2 meters. They are launching themselves at a speed, not actually running.

Alligators can't run 30 miles per hour. This is seems to be a new urban online myth a far as I can tell. I buy that they can pounce i.e. jump 30 miles per hour but not run.

It should not be energetically or bio-mechanically possible for alligators to reach most of the faster claimed speeds and there is no video of them doing so 7, 9, 10, 11, 15, 20, 30, and 35 mph have been claimed, but there is no video evidence for anything over 11 on land.
