FIFA World Cup 2002 - Disgrace of a Sport

In 2002, Korea and Japan were given the chance to host the FIFA World Cup. What was supposed to be a beautiful sporting event that consisted of flying colors from a variety of nations turned into an infamous plot to derail the hopes and dreams of the nations cheated.

During the tournament, South Korea defeated giants Italy and Spain through dirty tactics consisting of playing rough football and having advantages from the referees (No cards given, no fouls given, no suspensions, cards and fouls given to the opposing team, goals disallowed for the opposing team, offside calls).

Here is my highlight reel of what occurred during those infamous days. Disgrace of a sport.

Byron Moreno, the referee from south korea-italy, was later suspended from his football federation for corruption and also drug arrested in NYC in 2011 (he was caught with 6kgs of heroin). Nice guy.

fun fact: moreno, the referee for the Italy vs south korea match, is a convicted heroin smuggler. After his arrest, Gianluigi Buffon was quoted as saying, "Six kilos of drugs? I believe Moreno had this already in 2002, but not in his underwear, in his system.”

These players were too professionals for that disgrace. Look at those italian legends, fighting with honor, despite the obvious disadvantage. That is the true roman blood. A nation with pride.

I have met Koreans who say that the highest moment in their football history was that game against Spain in 2002. Shameful.
