I saw a video where he was asked to talk at Stanford by the Young Republicans and the students blocked entryways so only a handful saw him. There was a raucous protest outside while he spoke to the 25 or so students who were able to see him. They chose ignorance every time.

Correction. Raymond Ibrahim is not an Arab. His parents are from Egypt and are Coptic Christians. The Copts are the original people of Egypt who lived there before the Arab Muslim conquests of Egypt.

There seems little fundamental difference between the approch taken to war by Muhhammed and Augustine. Both believed that war was permissible in various situations but only when it met criteria to be found Just, and it must be regulated to avoid atrocity and immorality. Both were fine with useing war to expannd the domain of the religion. The only major difference I see is the presence of Jizya in Islam.

Surely the real contrast is between the example of Jesus and that of the world. Jesus was offered a crown, he fled to the mountain, he told his disciples to bring swords to gethsemane in order to order the one who tried to use his to return it to it's place. We are told, unequivocally, to love our neighbor as ourselves. Where is the room for war in that?

Mr Spencer mixes lies with some truth. Here are the facts:
1. Mohammad never fought the Christians, because the Christians did not support the Meccans, who had taken upon themselves to murder all Muslims and force the old Arab Pagan Tradition on pain of death on the Muslims, in three waves of attacks. First in the Battle of Badr, Second in the Battle of Ohad and finally in the Battle of the Trench. His primary enemies were his own tribe, his own relatives.
2. Jews of Madina invited him to come, in the hope of using him to dominate the Arabs. The Arab tribes of Aws and Khazraj in Madina were constantly at war with each other, and backed by the Jewish tribes to maintain their hegemony over Madina through the divide and control principle. When Mohammad came and made peace between the Arab tribes, the Jewish tribes turned on him instead and lead to some fights with them. They (the Jewish tribes, then instigated the pagan Arabs to attack Madina) which was finally repulsed permanently in the THIRD wave of attack of the Pagans of Mecca.
3. However, Jewish tribes that did not partake in attacking or supporting attackers continued to live in Arabia and had a cordial relationship and practiced their faith freely.
4. Jihad is only allowed in self defense, although this principle was tampered with by the later Caliphs. Quran is clear in 2:257, that there is no compulsion in the matters of faith. All people are free to believe as they will, as that is the divine injunction - so people choose to follow their own understanding.
5. Quran 22:40 clearly indicates that most Muslims, Christians and Jews are good people, as they remember God day and night in their "Mosques, Churches, Synagogues and Monasteries. Fight is only with such people who attack you or help the attackers, even if they be Christian or Jewish.
6. Quran 2:62 and 5:69 clearly says that those who are Muslims, Jews, Christians and others who believe in God and the Last day and do good have nothing to fear or to regret....
7. Jizya or tax on non-Muslims comes in two forms. (a) Regular Jizya: Which is based on the share of each individual sharing in the defense expenses for the community allocated on a per person basis. All able bodied Muslim men were required to be available for service to fight if attacked. This requirement was not applied on the non-Muslim men. Instead they would pay a fee or Jizya. If however, they chose to join the fighters the Jizya was not applicable on them. (b) Punitive Jizya: This was applied in periods of five years, for those among the Non-Muslims who supported the enemy and could be as high as half their income. This would be reduced in increments as the loyalty is established and in many cases it will be completely waived once it was clear that the non-Muslims would not undermine or support the enemies. Muslims in contrast had to pay several religious taxes, including Zakat (2.5% of Income), Fitra tax in Ramazan, Khums (20% on savings or money that one got without working for it) plus "Sadaqaats" given to the poor and needy and other religious taxes and payments that only Muslims had to make as a part of their beliefs. None of these taxes were levied on the non-Muslims, except for the regular Jizya.
So, Mr. Spencer is mixing truths with lies or perhaps misunderstandings on his part. Thanks. Ali
