it looks like they only switch instantly when carol uses her powers. kamala was able to use hers for quite a while but when carol uses hers, they switch before she even throw a blast. maybe that's the reason why in the trailers, when they're fighting the villain, carol uses the ronan staff while the other two uses their powers.
