Looking to come to Spain, but don't know if the Canary Islands would be a better choice than mainland Spain? Both have their pros and cons. I'll share my personal experience living in both places and tell you the good points and the bad points of both.

I've been to Barcelona, Madrid, and the Canary Islands, but if I I was planning on living there I would definitely choose the Canary Islands 💜

My first touch with the Spanish language was watching a Venezuelan telenovela from the TV in my home country (Finland). I fell in love with the language, studied it in the middle school, then in high school and then in the uni. The standard, Castilian Spanish, which they teach us in my country, always felt like something distinct from the language of the telenovela. Now I'm living in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and I love how my accent has developed here.

La similitud es solo el acento, con el caribe. En Canarias no están oyendo salsa ni bailando todo el dia. El folklore canario no tiene nada que ver con América.

Kai, you’re making this tough! I’m going back and forth between Spain, the Canary Islands and Lisbon. I wanted to start learning a language now, so I can be somewhat conversational by the time I move there, but...sheesh, looks like these 3 places all speak different languages! Can I get by with Castilian Spanish in both Spain and the Canary Islands? Also, could you do a cost comparison between a quieter, smaller town in Spain, vs. the Canary’s? I’m a digital nomad over 50, that will need high speed internet, and I want to get the biggest bang for my buck. Lisbon is getting pricier as we speak, so I might have to table that one. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!
