The movie is wonderful and so well made. Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman are brilliant. Zach Braff must take lots of credit too. Great interview with both of them.

I honestly thought this movie would have done better if they also explored the immediate aftermath of the accident. it begins well and then the accident is shown. Its very good till then and the scenes of Pugh's addiction are very well shown. Like how Pugh split with her boyfriend and then proceed with her evolution in stages. The first stage being her going junkie. then second stage being going to to group therapy.
Also her relationship with Freeman is shown a little too easy. I think there had to be initial coldness and resentment. In the first scene it was Freeman who stopped her when it should be the secretary.
Also the scene where she meets her ex and his new GF should have been better constructed. Like she goes to AA and then she is recovering and gets to know that her BF is back in town and tries to meet him but gets surprise of her life when his new GF shows up. There should have been a fight there and she goes back to addiction. Then her mother goes to Freeman's house and tells her about his daughter's condition. Molly Shannon was easily the best performer. use her more. and then Morgan Freeman goes up and tries to convince her and in the debate he tells her the truth. But also gives her life changing advice that how he overcome his addiction. The next day she goes to their house and says sorry and reveals the incident. And how she was facing addiction.
And then she sells the Rolex and checks into rehab. If possible they could show a scene where little Pugh after being scolded by her mom for asking about her dad goes into the attic and finds the Rolex in her toy box.
But when she returns to meet Freeman he finds his funeral happening and there his son gives him the letter where Freeman posts and emotional letter and tells her he forgave her.
Pugh goes to her BF and gives him the engagement ring she had but not returned and gives the niece a football and returns to her car where her mom is waiting for her. Waving good bye to both of them.
As I know it easy to be critical in hindsight but if you are making a movie about loss grief and redemption you have to dive into it.
The problem is that instead of trying to keep the story real and hard hitting Zach Braff sugar coats it make all the the people look like a good person. Instead of trying to show that people can be misguided and act irrationally all his characters can do no wrong even if faced with the toughest of choices. And to make your story work you have to get some emotional mileage out of your story. There are a few scenes but not enough.
Zach the director worked but the screen writer failed.
