Derek Watts and Ruda Landman kicked off Carte Blanche on the 28th of August 1988. This M-Net actuality programme became a household name, delivering on its promise for South Africa: “You have the right to see it all”.

In their footsteps Devi Sankaree Govender, Macfarlane Moleli, Bongani Bingwa, Claire Mawisa and many more followed.

This video is SLOW’s’ love letter to Carte Blanche. For being 35 years on air. A thank you to those in front and behind the camera. And of course, to our favourite television uncle, Derek Watts.

Thanks for covering this. I was a kid when I first heard the Carte Blanche theme on TV so it’s history is unknown to me.
RIP Derek 💔

I grew up in SA and our Sunday family ritual was a roast dinner followed by all sitting together in the lounge to watch Carte Blanche...
In the UK now and when I heard the news that Derek had passed it was a bit of a gut punch, in a strange way I feel like a part of my childhood has gone with him...
