The German Ace pulled up alongside the crippled B-17, saluted, waved, and flew away.

THIS STORY:

The Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler incident occurred on 20 December 1943, when, after a successful bomb run on Bremen, 2nd Lt. Charles "Charlie" Brown's B-17F Flying Fortress Ye Olde Pub of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) was severely damaged by German fighters. Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler had the opportunity to shoot down the crippled bomber but did not do so, and instead escorted it over and past German-occupied territory so as to protect it.

The two pilots met each other 50 years later and developed a friendship that lasted their lifetimes.

_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...

This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.

Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

More people need to hear stories like this. So many are xenophobic towards Germans to this day thinking they are bloodthirsty monsters with no compassion. I’ve been to Germany and it’s a beautiful place to visit!

I met Mr. Stigler back in the 90s in a Hobby shop outside Vancouver, Canada. I was looking at a model plane believe it was a Me.163 and this gentleman behind me got started in conversation describing how they would wait till the bombers were nearly overhead then takeoff straight up nearly vertical. Said he was in the Luftwaffe as a pilot but never flew that plane but BF-109G's mainly. I told him me father was on Spitfires in the Mediterranean Campaign ah the Spifire was a wonderful machine especially in front never behind he laughed 😂. Never knew who he has till years later when I saw a video of him and Charles Brown did it dawn on me who I had actually talked to for almost 15 minutes...never forgot that all these years later.

I don’t say “happy” Memorial Day but appreciate this story today 🇺🇸 Thank you.

We need to remember our veterans are human first. And they have family they left behind. Rest in Peace to all our heroes.

Wow! This was an incredible story. I have to say "Thank You, Sir" to Franz for being the kind of man who saw beyond the scope of war and reacted to the plight of other men who were just trying to make it home, too. Awesome!!

Thanks for this wonderful story of courage and compassion, Ron. Franz Stigler took a huge chance letting that B17 "escape, " putting his own life on the line. He was a fighter pilot - but first, he was a human being. Love how they became friends so many years later. May the Browns and the Stiglers R.I.P.

What a fantastic story, and you told it so well. I've heard of it before, but I'm glad you reminded me.
How many others could have had good lives if not for the war. Thanks for your videos. 🇦🇺

❤ That was a wonderful true story to hear any day but especially today. And the two “enemies” became close friends. Awesome.

I've met a few WWII vets over the years, great guys. There are lots of stories like this from that war, probably a lot more that were never told as well!! Thank you and God Bless all the vets!! Sad to see that some of our current leaders seem to be repeating history rather than learning from it!! Thanks Ron!

Wow what an amazing story. It just goes to show most of the soldiers don’t want to kill. It makes me think about how during WWI the soldiers were able to celebrate Christmas together and play cards.
