The AMS1117-3.3 linear regulator should not "blow up" even when its dissipation exceeds its rating. The datasheet states that the device has built-in protection for excessive heat buildup and will shut itself down to prevent permanent damage. I have conducted experiments and proven that this is true for genuine 1117 regulator ICs. Sadly, there are many modules from China (and perhaps other places) that are using counterfeit 1117 ICs that do not have thermal protection. Not only will these devices self-destruct, they will often pass their input voltage directly to their output and destroy all or parts of the circuitry they are supposed to power. Better check them before you use them!
