Can’t we just add and subtract one in the numerator

∫x^2/(1+x^2 )dx

∫(1+x^2-1)/(1+x^2 ) ⅆx

∫(1+x^2)/(1+x^2 )ⅆx - ∫ⅆx/(1+x^2 )

∫ⅆx - ∫ⅆx/(1+x^2 )

x - arctan(x) +c
