Flying Through Class Delta - TakingOff Ep 102

Early lessons for student pilots include airspaces and one of the easier one is the Class D (or "class delta"). For me (Dan @SFilmsTakingOff), my flying lessons were at a Class D airport, so I got a lot of practice early on. Class D airspace is usually a 5 mile cylinder around the airport and goes from ground up to a specified altitude , and you must establish two way communication with ATC to enter the airspace.
In this flight, I take off from a Class G airport, untowered (or referred to as "uncontrolled"), and immediately in my path is a Class D airport. The pilot passing through will call for a "transition". In this flight, after transition, I fly just a little further to land at the Class D airport I did my student pilot training in.

What is the small circle on your Foreflight map around your airplane that seems to be growing after takeoff?

Yea, for an example of what happens when you are slow to talk to a class delta tower, go check out my 1st check ride video.

One thing I would add is always include your call sign on every transmission to ATC. There have been accidents caused by omitting callsigns.

Not being a pilot but starting to learn the basics, it looked like you did a straight in approach to landing on what seemed like a VFR flight. I didn't hear any comms that mentioned straight in vs. doing the usual pattern. If it was straight in, how did you know?

Great job. I was studying the sectional and discovered that there is a unimproved runway (Hicks 74T) 20 miles north from Hicks T67, I'm wondering how often people gets to the wrong one.

Flew into Spinks a couple of years ago, cleared to land 35 Left, lined up for Bravo taxiway, looked funny, called tower and was told 35 Right was a grass strip and landed on the runway no incident. Then flew to Hicks for lunch flying West around the controlled space then over Eagle Mountain Lake.

Great video Dan, Got my blood pumping just a little. I did my PPL at Addision, I think it is a good idea to train at a controlled field, it gives you more experience than those who didn't. I don't know what the current regs require, but back when I got my PPL they only required 3 takeoff/landings from a controlled field. I had many friends that trained at uncontrolled fields that after getting their PPL were terrified to fly into a controlled field, me it was just routine, maybe that's a poor choice of words, I was comfortable because I trained at controlled field.

So I am curious about your statement in reference to transitioning or even entering. 91.129 says nothing about requiring permission simply “establish two way radio communications” which is accomplished when they reply to your initial call. Now Class B and C are different all together.

Good job, love your nose wheel "pre-spinning" prior to landing - HA!

I was under the impression that if the tower of a class Delta acknowledged your call sign that you could enter the airspace. That is you don't have to hear "Cleared into the Delta". Am I wrong?

How old do you have to be to learn to fly a plane

I have a very similar set of airspaces southeast of Tacoma. McCord AFB under SEA class B, with mountains and restricted area constraints.

Another great video! I really liked seeing you flying in an environment that was a little bit rushed. I learned to fly in the Dallas area in the early 60's at an airport that is no longer there--Dallas-Garland Airport. I soloed, got my PPL and my Commercial there. It was a great environment to learn to fly in. The area has changed just a little bit!!!!

Excellent video‼️Question:: what size is your iPad and name/model of yoke mount.?

If I heard "Centurion 's on the roll" on the radio, I would visualize a big dude wearing armor sitting on baked goods... It's not very "aviation sounding."

well a 206 is Basically a 210 with fixed gear and a wing strut so that's closer than a Cherokee

I have a question, when I listen to videos some of them the pilot calls the tower using the towers name and when he signs off uses the towers name again...Example..Atlanta Cessna 1234 is with you at fl 50 Atlanta....why the second Atlanta? Ive been flying since 1963 and was never taught to do that I was taught to be as short as possible...can you answer this?
