This could put the kidnapper under a lot of stress and let the kid go, even though this is a pretty smart realization.

The sad thing is that it's usually parents who don't get custody that do this

Amber alerts are the things that give you a heart atack when you hear it

Sad how they still lose their lives from something that’s supposed to save their lives.

there was a case that recently happened where I live. a woman's on and off boyfriend killed her in her house and kidnapped the kids. a 6 and 4 yr old. once the amber alert was out everybody was closing in on the guy. eventually they managed to catch him. the 6 yr old survived he had already killed the 4 yr old and dumped her body on the rode only a few blocks down from where he was caught. I think he was planning to dump them both in different locations hadn't he been caught. I hope the 6 yr old recovers from the mental trauma

SpongeBob looks strangely happy telling us this morbid fact.

An amber alert actually saved my life believe it or not. My dad's friend was a pedo and my family didn't know it and he told me they said he could pick me up from school. Me being the dumb kid I was, believed him. I managed to get away before he did anything because the amber alert made him panic giving me a chance to escape.

In some cases it could be personal like a parent that had their kid go thru CPS, etc and they probably take off with their own flesh & blood, just revoked of their parenting.

I got an amber alert, and it said the suspect was in a black jeep. An hour later, I saw a black jeep being chased by cop cars.

Difficult to measure stats but not impossible.
I always like the concept of policies that deter crime though, since it is a valid variable to account for, but almost impossible to measure. You can measure criminals who have been caught and ask them if they amber alert triggered them to do it, or ask them if it triggered them to release the child... but you can't measure those who decided to never try out of fear of the system.

We just had one a couple of weeks ago for an autistic boy that wandered away from his apartment while his mother was bathing one of his siblings. It did not have a happy ending, as they found him in a nearby creek the next day, but not all Amber Alerts are for abductions. During the time he was missing, the entire community was out looking for him.

I think the bigger, more unmeasurable effect it has is as a deterrent. If you know that by kidnapping a bunch of people will be alerted and on the lookout for you, it makes your job a lot tougher and might dissuade you from even making an attempt.

Is SpongeBob really smart behind the cameras?

I feel like if the plates/offenders name were on the text they’d always get released, but it being vague makes them think they can ‘get rid of the evidence’ so to speak

If someone kidnaps someone for the purpose of ransom it is pretty unlikely they’re just going get rid of their chance to make money. It’s kinda like quitting a new job before getting your pay check
