If you are trying to learn guitar you will definitely want to make sure you’re not wasting your time.

In this video, I’m going to show you the 5 worst pick and fret hand errors that happen when people attempt to learn how to play the guitar.

The irony is that many of these techniques are the most popular methods that people use when trying to learn how to pick and fret notes on this instrument.

There is not many YT channels where 'lesson' is not just an excuse to sell website content.
Man you never clickbait nor dissapoint. As for me you're real super star!

I'm completely self taught but your 'spider crawl lesson is one of the biggest help with playing ive ever had. Also with the thumb on your fret hand the technique naturally puts it in a better place and really helps bars aswell

Thank you for this, I’m picking up a guitar for the first time in about 10 years and trying to learn the right way instead of picking up all of my old bad habits

Another lesson chock full of incredibly useful tips & tricks. As an "advanced beginner" who has been around the sun 62 times I tend to get frustrated with my perceived lack of progress. Your videos always bring me back to earth & offer positive vibes & encouragement. Thanks for giving so much back to the beginner guitar community.

I think the only problem is if a student doesn't think a certain teqhnique isnt working for them and then they need to explore a different way, I don't believe there is a set way as playing guitar is all about expressing yourself, I think whatever works for you as long as you are not causing undue stress on your hands. Look at Wes Montgomery who anchored quite alot from what I've seen.I think it's worth looking at everything and then deciding what works best for me. I think that is the essence of what makes so many guitar players 'unique'.

I watched this just to make sure I was using the right techniques - though never complacent about my playing. Seems that despite being self taught - over the years I've developed through trial and error the right way to do stuff. I think your most important piece of advice that should not be underestimated is - to relax. I have to consciously do that when I know something tricky is coming up to do.

I´m a long timed self instructor. I can´t find any mistakes in your vid. You are absolutely right. Practice is the Key

Start with alternate- never learn to do it wrong at first. My first lesson I learned that and immediately improved. 1 week in I was playing bar chords and Nirvana. If your teacher doesn’t hold you back that’s really not very hard. First song was heart shaped box in drop D. Week 2 smells like teen spirit. I was 12- I am now 40. Beware of paying teachers who talk more than they play- it’s easier to see and copy then take orders. If they aren’t doing it find a new one- teachers who don’t demonstrate are the worst. Some people really think they can teach what they can barely play- especially more advanced. If you don’t feel comfortable quitting that’s a bad sign- often the best thing to do is quit and move on bc a lot of teachers only know how to teach beginners. Or you might need someone who specializes in a dif style bc your tastes evolve. You might start with rock then decide to learn jazz etc. imo you shouldn’t teach an instrument if you can’t read music- but unfortunately most guitar teachers actually don’t seem to read at all.

I’m self-taught, and I feel pretty lucky after watching this, that I didn’t fall too far into any really bad playing techniques. I am seriously considering getting some lessons after all these years though, just to make sure I’m not fooling myself!

After long directing my own study, getting some professional, constructive feedback on my playing would be useful.

I'm happy to say that after playing for about 10 months while learning on my own I don't make any of these mistakes. I play fingerstyle and used to anchor the pinky but was able to get over it quickly, though while I was doing it I thought it would be impossible to do so. It turned out to be just more intuitive to not anchor. Though, players like Tommy Emmamuel do it ALL THE TIME and he's better than me (and probably all of us) by miles.

Your instruction is fantastic. Right now I'm just trying to learn how to do the basics and have just a little bit of control of the guitar before I jump into more education, but I will be coming back to you for help. Thank you so much!!

Thanks for these tips. As a new player I find that when I look at my right hand my left hand gets lost, and when I look at my left hand my right hand gets lost. I've been wondering how to solve that right hand issue without having to anchor it with a little finger because I know over time I'll need to spend more time watching the frets. The palm and knuckle brushing idea is going to get a workout now since I hadn't seen that suggested anywhere before.

Way back in the Sixties when I started playing, I had the good luck to pick as you have shown. However, I always had a problem with tension with my Fretting Hand, a Bad Habit that is a struggle to overcome. Not having played much over the past 16+ Years, your guidance is really great and much appreciated, thank you.

Thank you, Andrew. I do skim many channels. I find your techniques, and method of instruction, is best for me. Playing since May, I am Left handed, and I'm over the quit, button. I have been learning the fretboard. An incredible feeling of satisfaction, when you learn the notes.
Thank you.
