전기•수도 끊긴 채 겨울 맞는 우크라이나
A harsh winter is expected for Ukraine,... as many parts of the country lack water, electricity and even food.
Lee Seung-jae has more on the worsening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
Waiting for drinking water,... residents of the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv can be seen in long lines,... clutching plastic bottles to fill,... as authorities struggle to supply drinking water to local homes.
Residents say access to drinking water has been scarce for months,... with locals also struggling to make ends meet.
"We haven't had drinking water for around six months. We have technical water from a river, but you can't drink it. So we use the river water and fill up on drinking water when we can."
According to local residents,.. Russian forces blew up a water pipeline near the city,... and since then access to water has been disrupted.
Because there are still active battles taking place in the area,... authorities are unable to fix the water pipeline and restore water for those living in the city.
Ukrainians are also making sure they get their hands on power generators and gas burners ahead of the winter season.
“I am getting ready for winter. There could be power cuts. I think generators are better. You just need to fill it with petrol and turn it on, then you'd have light, you could charge the phones and watch television.”
According to reports, communities at apartment blocks are gathering funds for generators to power water pumps in case of power cuts so there is at least water.
The Ukraine government says while power has been restored for millions of people,... its citizens should prepare for more blackouts and asked people to cut down on their electricity consumption wherever possible.
Ukrainian authorities also plan to set up mobile heating stations in the streets in case people experience power outages at home. They have also developed evacuation plans in case critical energy facilities are hit.
