Just did this on my Ultra 5! I ran into the same no-boot problem and STOP+END fixed the problem! Thanks so much for posting that trick... I missed the combination too on the Sun keyboard cheat sheet.

Ah, Sun with their black on white screen, memories. That is weird, to include a 3V cell inside an epoxy housing, never seen this before. Any ideas why they did that anyway, to sell service and parts? Not a very (environment) friendly solution. Are you not afraid that the left battery starts to leak some day?
