Here is the lore reason for it

The Klyntar (more commonly know as symbiotes) are separated into different power classes, which are determined by their color
Black symbiotes, like Venom, are the weakest, whereas red symbiotes, like Carnage, are the strongest
The color also determines their bonding methods
While I'm not entirely sure on all the bonding methods, black Klyntar bond by being absorbed into the overall body, whereas reds bond with the blood

Of course, their age is a huge factor, too
The older, the stronger
And because they can't die from aging, they get exponentially stronger with age

Edit: since people are getting confused I'll explain a little more

Yes, older symbiotes are stronger
But as someone pointed out, the newer generations are stronger than the one before
This means that any offspring of Carnage could probably kill Thor or smth

However, the colors still tell what abilities they have
So while a black symbiote offspring would still be stronger than Venom, it would have the same abilities as him
