After initial reports that no major findings had arisen from a new investigation into the 1994 sinking of the MS Estonia ferry, diving work has revealed that the vessel's vehicle ramp now lies in a fully-open position, whereas it had previously been reported to have been in a closed position.

852 souls perished. This was an unimaginable loss. The scariest thing about it was how fast the ship went down, within 40 minutes the ship was resting at the bottom of the ocean floor. This must of have been absolutely terrifying to witness. GOD BLESS THOSE WHO WERE LOST.

This is fantastic! This is so professionally done I thought this was taken from the National Geographic series "Drain the Oceans" and was about to ask which episode it was from lol.

Beautiful and powerful film. The wreckage is viewed as the "Sacred Space" that it is. It ended perfectly, without having to enter(violate) the tomb. Such Respect! I was studying the Estonian Language down in Boston at the time this happened. Many Baltic Peoples had a family member or more lost It was just in the early years after Soviet withdrawal. Time stopped for many. Thank you for stirring up the bittersweet.

Something about this tragedy just wrenches my heart. RIP to those that perished.

The only sensible alternative to investigating the disaster is to salvage the ship to dry land. Preferably to those who built m / s Estonia. Then it would also be an independent and impartial investigation. It's the only way to really get the truth out and prevent it from happening again.

One minute your on a ship, next minute every cross passage is a gaping chasm that you have to cross, every stairwell has to be climbed like a rockface and every door weighs twice as much due to gravity.

This my friend is a master class on what famous shipwrecks look like with out going in to the tomb of those that perished I'll be keeping a close eye on this channel for more wonderius vessels

What is crazy is that this is exactly like a dream I had around 20 years ago (I'll mention - I almost never remember any of my dreams). But my dream looked exactly like this. For some reason the sea had drained, exposing a weathered wreck of the MS Estonia. But passengers were coming out from the wreck totally unhurt and started walking back to land in big groups. Oblivious that years had passed, they acted as if they had simply suddenly woken up in the wreck.

Thanks for your work - I lost my granddad on this ship.

According to Margus Kurm, who piloted the previous Estonian-led survey in 2005–2009, the car ramp was closed when Estonia sank in 1994.

He says it’s hard to believe the ramp would have descended on its own.  In an interview with Estonian Õhtuleht, Kurm said he believed the ramp had been removed afterwards.

According to Kurmi's own earlier theory, the cause of the sinking of M / S Estonia is a collision with a submarine.

There have been quite a few cases where ferries have sunk because the front door was left open or opened up while being out at sea. When are the designers going to realise that these huge open bow doors are potential deathtraps? I mean you leave it open for 5 minutes and the ship will go down guaranteed.

A detachable bow is the worst design ever imagined. Also when ships go to a port they’re mostly likely on their starboard or port side never faced up to a port so it’s really impractical that it’s made like that

I was at sea when this happened. The ship I was on tied up next to it in the Baltic somewhere, it was massive compared to the small cruise ship i was on. A bar steward on board lost his mother. Scary time.

Wonder who opened it and what they removed. First divers couldn't ger into the car deck because it was almost completely closed.

It should be raised, it's not that deep (80m), it's the least we could do for the victims. Regardless of their condition, they deserve a proper burial.

You forgot the large hole in the side, just next to "Estline".
