Nagas or snakes are actually a representation of TIME itself in Hinduism. Ananta Sesh Naga in which ANANTA means INFINITE and SESH means REMAINDER, therefore he represents the infinite nature of the great TIME and he is the REMAINDER after the dissolution of the CREATION.

Naga is not like todays snakes. In Sanskrit snakes are called "Sarpa" from the word serpent word come in english. Naga are described as half man & half reptile creature. May be it's a anlogy for their ability.They are short in height & communicate with people for their needs. They are superior than human in intelligence & power & they also know the hidden occult power. So human worship them, feed them for their ability & they protect those people.
