Great video jason. I have found that alot people dont consider the roots when putting Japanese maples in full sun all day every day. If the tree has a healthy root system full of fine fibrous roots then its more than likely will be able to handle full sun and the warm wind if supplied with water when needed. The roots are then able to keep the moisture with in the leaves.

Obviously if it gets to hot then some shade will be needed but most importantly healthy roots leads to healthy leafs throughout the growing season.

I have also found that a tree can also push larger leaves after defoliating and i only really use the concept to increase ramification, increasing the bud selection for the next season that would decrease leaf size naturally (doesnt work for all species of trees 😅)

But i really enjoyed this video and feel that alot of people can benefit from what has been shown 👍

Thank you Jason for this helpful video. I have never had great success with maples for this very reason, but will try again 🤞

Good stuff! I use shade cloth, I’m gone 13hrs a day for work and it’s been SUPER HELPFUL. But leaf scorching is still something I have to deal with

What type of Acer is the one you defoliated? I love the color and the trunk is just awesome. Way to go

Thank you so much for this great video. I've used this technique before, but learned a lot about the tree physiology - extremely helpful since I have other species that are prone to scorching. Do you notice any correlation with leaf scorch and trees re-potted the same spring?

Those leaves were like crisps! I had the same issue on a couple I've planted from pot to open ground .Do you think its the changeable weather?

Hi Jason, great video, as usual, beginner, never defoliated, if you defoliate and get a second flush of smaller leaves, does it make any difference to the size of next year's leaves? Thanks

Too late to do that now in the uk? Would you still have enough time for a second flush and harden ?
