Liscard Battery / Magazine

Liscard Battery was built on the Wirral side of the River Mersey three quarters of a mile up river from Fort Perch Rock.

The fort had two batteries of guns. Behind the gun batteries were a range of small barrack rooms, a cook house, store rooms and a guard room with two cells.

The fort was built between 1856 and 1858. For the consideration to defend Great Britain’s commercial ports.

the Battery was too far up river to be of any protection to the docks; instead it was recommended that it be used as a submarine mining station.

The Battery’s days eventually were numbered and it was disarmed 1894. The Battery’s Twin Towers can be seen today and the gorge wall survives, but all the buildings erected against it have gone.
