Bringing in skilled migrants 'like a heroin fix'

Business commentator Terry McCrann says the announcement of a jobs summit to be held in early September comes from a government that “doesn’t have a clue” about what to about the economy generally nor “how to create jobs”.

He said there are also businesses "desperately wanting a short-term fix" for problems related to COVID including staff shortages when workers have to isolate.

"So the two things are slightly separate but they come back to this basic point that bringing in hundreds of thousands of workers is really like a heroin fix," he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

"It’s not something that makes sense for Australians generally and it’s not something that makes sense for the economy going forward."

I don't feel like I live in a country at all. It's just a economic zone for anyone. There is no sense of loyalty or pride in it being "my country". I can be replaced by any person anywhere in the world at any time. A country should be more than an economy, and diversity is not our strength.

Having the unemployed sitting in big cities and paying them when you could just say well there's a job in this country town, a school that needs more children to get better funding, a community that needs more people just to keep the health system (for a better word ) profitable !

migration will just stagnate wages even more and considering there is a house shortage it will push rents up even more as it is already a investors market and so people who dont have multiple people in a unit or house wont be able to afford rent

Unemployment, not labour shortages will be the problem heading into 2023. Global recession plus locally rising labour costs such as Albo's pay rise we all had to have, the super levy increase and workers expending all their sick leave plus rising energy and supply costs will kill jobs. Many small businesses, especially in hospitality, will be hit hard by people cutting their spending and will close. That will hurt young voters who were so eager to have the socialist government their teachers and uni lecturers promised would be utopia. Prosperity is not eternal. As Whitlam demonstrated.

As long as business can get people from overseas instead of training locally they will not invest in training. Back them into a corner and refuse the immigration sugar hit and they will start coming up with a solution on how to train people fast.
Instead of having unemployable Phd's from India working as taxi drivers, any visa should not lead to permanent residence, it should be a temporary fix for two years and then they must leave. Two years is long enough to find and start training people.
